About
I am Dr. Makena Mbogori aka The femmeorthopod, born ,raised and fully trained in Nairobi, Kenya. Currently undertaking an Upper Extremity Surgery Fellowship at the QEII Hospital Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. I am energetic, industrious & passionate about all things Ortho. My goal in life is to constantly thrive and flourish in the true purpose of my existence and the nature and practice of Orthopaedic Surgery and all its nuances plays a big part in that goal.
What made you join IODA?
From the moment I decided that I wanted to be an Orthopaedic Surgeon, way back in my final years of medical school, there was absolutely noone and nothing that could tell me otherwise. And rightfully so as I embarked on my internship and residency and now practice, the universe and all energies therein aligned in such a way that my passion and zeal for the field has never wavered despite the usual life ups and downs, challenges, doubts, fears and what not.
I appreciate the space and message that IODA has created whereby anyone regardless of race, gender, identity etc for as long as they have an interest and heart for the practice of Ortho can and are encouraged to be a part of it. I am honored to be a part of this vision too.
How have you approached DEI in your workplace?
I strive to make this a part of my day to day interactions with any and all members of my team at work i.e. be it inviting a female medical student who is interested in Orthopaedic Surgery to scrub into a case with me or encouraging an exhausted resident who is on call that they are truly doing a great job. I have also been part of growing the space of Kenyan Women Surgeons as I serve as the Executive Secretary for the Kenya Association of Women Surgeons.
How do you define inclusion?
An environment, space or practice that everyone is entitled to be in regardless of their individual characteristics
and differences and feel validated by their presence therein.
What is your proudest achievement?
Honestly Everyday that I am able to successfully integrate and experience what I love to do, what I am good at and continue to get good at doing and the ability to help others and give back to society
