My name is Tom, and I am a senior research fellow at the University of Texas at Austin. I am completing my PhD in orthopaedic surgery with Dr. David Ring. Our main research interests are the psychological and social aspects of orthopaedic illness, cost, and value of care.

I am a first generation doctor and a son of parents who set the standard for financially and spiritually empowering underrepresented minorities in the United States of America. Because of them, DEI is fundamental to who I am. I hope to bring this trait into the field of Orthopaedics.

I recently retired from 33 years of hand and upper extremity private practice as a Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic surgery at the University of Rochester. My practice was a combination of clinical and academic endeavors. I have been actively involved in research and education with a focus on thumb CMC reconstruction and ethics. I was the former chief of Orthopaedics at a 200 bed community hospital where I was responsible for resident education and managed an all-male department. I served as the managing partner of a private practice which I started as a solo practitioner in 1989 and hired two partners several years later.

I have served in volunteer capacities for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons as the former chair of the Committee on Ethics and Professionalism, a member of the Committee on Outside Interests, and currently, a member of the Governance Committee. I am a member of the ASSH, the International Wrist Investigators Workshop (IWIW) and have served as a past board member for the Foundation of Hand Research and Education and the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society. My volunteer clinical work has included mission trips to Chinle AZ for the Indian Health Service and Nicaragua for Health Volunteers Overseas.

Although I have retired from private practice, I remain actively involved with volunteer work and ongoing teaching and presentations of a method of thumb CMC arthritis reconstruction which I developed, known as the Suture Suspension Arthroplasty, as well as research and development of medical technology for future methods of thumb CMC reconstruction.

I’m proud to say that I am a mother-daughter team of Orthopaedic surgeons, as my eldest child is a 3rd year resident at Washington University and my son is a 3rd year medical student at USC who is leaning towards pursuing a career in Orthopaedics.
